While undergoing training to become an imam [an Islamic religious leader], the man placed his trust in Christ. His conversion angered members of his family, who have threatened his life if he doesn’t successfully complete his training and move to a Gulf state to take up an Islamic post. “Your head will be on the street,” one of his family members told him. Front-line workers have requested prayer for the new believer as they determine how to best serve him. Jordan is a majority-Muslim nation, and only 2 percent of its population are Christians. In addition to facing severe family pressure, Christian converts in Jordan can also be persecuted, sometimes violently, by their tribes and local communities.

Syrian Christian Refugees Fear Return https://www.persecution.com/stories/syrian-christian-refugees-fear-return/ Thu, 19 Oct 2023 07:07:05 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/syrian-christian-refugees-fear-return/ Since the 2011 outbreak of civil war in Syria, hundreds of thousands have fled to neighboring countries, including Jordan. Many refugees have had the opportunity to hear the gospel during their displacement, and a significant number of Syrians have become followers of Christ through the witness of Jordanian Christians. Some Syrian refugees now worry that the government of Jordan is planning to force them to return to Syria. “I could be killed at the border,” said one Syrian Christian. Front-line workers request prayer for wisdom as they counsel Syrian refugees and for increased opportunities to share the gospel and provide biblical discipleship. “There is a huge opening among the hearts of Syrians,” said a front-line worker. “But they need more discipleship and more strengthening in their faith.”

Christian Woman Beaten by Muslim Husband https://www.persecution.com/stories/christian-woman-beaten-by-muslim-husband/ Thu, 28 Sep 2023 07:07:02 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/christian-woman-beaten-by-muslim-husband/ After a woman in Jordan became a Christian, her Muslim husband began to beat her frequently. Ghazal, who left Islam to follow Christ, was beaten so severely recently that she had to be hospitalized. “He knocked her front teeth out,” a front-line worker said, “yet she is holding fast to her faith.” Persecution from family members is a common reality for Christians in Jordan, especially for those who leave Islam to follow Christ. Often, family members create severe hardships for these believers by taking their homes, jobs and even their children. Ghazal remains with her husband because she fears that under Islamic law, she would lose her children if she left him. Pray for Ghazal’s protection and that her husband will have a change of heart.
