Converts from Islam are often beaten, and the small Christian minority is generally oppressed by society. Due to this constant pressure, church groups often have trouble trusting each other and working together. “Pray for the unity of the persecuted body there,” a front-line worker requested, adding that unity among Christians will help to advance God’s kingdom.

Two Church Leaders Arrested, Fined https://www.persecution.com/stories/two-church-leaders-arrested-fined/ Thu, 13 Nov 2025 08:07:07 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/two-church-leaders-arrested-fined/ On September 14, 2025, government officials entered a church, began recording the service and ultimately arrested two church leaders. The officials first demanded to see documents authorizing the religious meeting. Two church leaders explained that the fellowship had been meeting since 1992 and that, under Article 34 of the Kyrgyz constitution, they were guaranteed “freedom of conscience and religion.” The officials then confiscated some of the church’s written materials and took two church leaders to the police station, where they were fined. The case is ongoing as the Christians plan to appeal the fine. “Brothers and sisters ask that Christians intercede for these two court cases,” wrote a front-line worker, “and also that churches in Kyrgyzstan will be able to freely hold worship services.”

Repressive New Religion Laws Considered https://www.persecution.com/stories/repressive-new-religion-laws-considered/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 07:07:03 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/repressive-new-religion-laws-considered/ The State Commission of Religious Affairs (SCRA) in Kyrgyzstan has proposed new religion laws. The laws currently in effect in this Central Asian country already require registration of churches and limit how churches can form, but the proposed laws are even more stringent. The laws require registration and regular re-registration as well as intrusive reporting procedures. They also set the minimum size for an organization restrictively high and require “founding members” to provide signatures and identifying information, opening individual Christians up to surveillance and harassment. The laws allow the SCRA to submit a church’s beliefs to “expert analysis” and require SCRA permission for any religious education or offsite activities. Even names, logos and symbols of organizations would require SCRA authorization. Penalties for violations are expected to be harsher than before.
