The social media posts called local Christians infidels and apostates and urged action against them. On April 7, an angry mob entered a cemetery where a Christian man had recently been buried, destroyed his tombstone and exhumed his body. They then dragged his body through the streets to a village over 10 miles away to rebury it. Hate-filled media posts continued afterward with comments warning clans and family members to cease all contact with Christians. According to front-line workers, the situation remains volatile. They request prayer that local Christians will feel the peace and presence of Christ, that they will have safety and freedom to worship, and that, even in the midst of these circumstances, they will shine the light of Christ to their Muslim neighbors.

Christians Arrested, Threatened https://www.persecution.com/stories/christians-arrested-threatened/ Thu, 18 Apr 2024 09:07:06 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/christians-arrested-threatened/ In December 2023, Mauritanian authorities arrested a group of around 15 Christians after a video of them participating in a baptism was posted online. All of the arrested Christians were former Muslims. Mauritania is dominated by Islamist leadership, and conversion from Islam is illegal. “At first, no lawyer would defend them,” said a front-line worker. “The officials tried to get them to apologize on social media for spreading the gospel, to agree to never promote Christianity, and to return to Islam,” he added. All of the Christians were released late in December after agreeing to only hold Christian services inside their homes. “This is an answer to prayer,” said the front-line worker, who requested additional prayer for the small Mauritanian Christian community and for more Bibles to be distributed in the restricted nation.
