Ministry Brings Hope to Hidi Youth

Boko Haram Islamists have regularly attacked Christian members of the Hidi people in eastern Cameroon, destroying the homes of Christians or killing them. VOM workers have ministered to some of the children and teenagers impacted by the deadly attacks. “If God loves me, why does he allow the rebels in our village to destroy our house, our hospitals and our churches and kill us?” asked one teenage boy. After receiving specialized care, the boy said, “Here I have learned to remind myself [that] whatever happens to me, God loves me.” Front-line workers request prayer for persecuted Christians in Cameroon: “Please pray especially for the Christians that had to leave their villages and are living in [camps for internally displaced people] who have lost hope to always remember that they have a future in Christ.”

Bibles Bring Freedom to New Believers

Northern Cameroon is a dangerous place for Christians, but that hasn’t stopped gospel workers from working to advance God’s kingdom in the region. The Islamist group Boko Haram regularly attacks Christians, and followers of ethnic animistic religions also persecute family members who become followers of Christ. One pastor is helping a widow whose husband was murdered by his own Muslim father after he became a Christian. The pastor said Bibles, especially audio Bibles, are needed for that area to help bring freedom to those enslaved to false ideologies. He said when he has audio Bibles available in local languages, he likes to give them to small groups of people so they can study God’s Word together.

Christian Convert Rescued from Captivity

Mahamat, a young Christian living in northern Cameroon, was imprisoned by his parents but later rescued. Mahamat was studying to become a teacher of the Quran when he rejected Islam and turned to Christ. On Jan. 3, 2025, his parents learned of Mahamat’s new faith and tried to convince him to recant. When that failed, they locked him inside a house. They also summoned Islamic clerics to persuade him to return to Islam. But when a relative who had also become a follower of Christ learned what was happening, she rescued Mahamat, who had been held captive for about a week. Front-line workers rejoice that Mahamat is free and are thankful for the rescue because they worried he could be poisoned or forcibly married to a Muslim woman. They request prayer for Mahamat and his Christian relative: for safety, for Mahamat to continue growing in his faith and that “every evil plan from the kingdom of darkness against his life will be destroyed.”

Christian Converts Threatened

Fadimatou, 18, grew up in a Muslim home. A college roommate shared the gospel with her, and she became a follower of Christ. Her grandfather, however, is upset about her conversion and has threatened to stop paying her tuition. If she must return home, Fadimatou fears she will be forced to marry a Muslim man. She requests prayer for protection and provision so she can continue her education. Another convert, Moussa, was born into a Muslim family in Cameroon to a father who had three wives and 26 children. When Moussa came to faith in Christ in 2020, some of his brothers blindfolded him and beat him. They had him arrested on false charges and jailed for three days, during which they stole his motorcycle and other items from his home. Moussa believes they broke into his shop and stole his entire inventory, his sole source of income. A front-line worker requests prayer for Moussa and his wife to endure this persecution.

Specialized Care Helps Persecuted Youth

Between April and July 2024, militants with the radical Islamist group Boko Haram attacked villages of the predominately Christian Hdi tribe in far northern Cameroon 11 different times. During their raids, the jihadis murdered villagers and abducted young people to serve as child soldiers or child brides. As many of the Hdi children who survived were traumatized, some of them received holistic spiritual care designed to help heal their emotional wounds. Afterward, one child told a front-line worker, “This is the first time this year that I have slept more than four hours uninterrupted. When I am in my community, I have to leave the house and go hide in the hills and sleep in the open.” The front-line worker requested prayers for healing for those who have suffered in Islamist attacks and that the attacks will cease.

Elder Christian Murdered in His Sleep

On July 10, militants from the Islamist group Boko Haram snuck into the home of a 75-year-old Christian and killed him in his sleep. This brother is described as a businessman and an active, faithful member of his local church. His family believes that the militants entered the home around 1:00 a.m. and slit his throat. The attack went unnoticed until his wife discovered what had happened and fled the house screaming, alerting neighbors. Front-line workers request prayer for this family and that Islamist attacks on Christians will cease.

New Believer Threatened, Homeless

A Christian brother is facing hardship after leaving Islam to follow Christ. This brother came to faith in Christ just weeks ago. After his girlfriend found out about his newfound faith, she reported him to his Muslim family, who locked him in a room for more than 24 hours to try to force him to recant his faith. The Christian brother fled after his release because his family threatened his life, and he is currently staying with another believer while he looks for a new home. Despite the opposition, the Christian brother remains committed to Christ. “He is firm in his commitment to follow Jesus,” a front-line worker said. “He wants to devote more time to studying the Bible. Please pray for peace, comfort and joy in Christ.” Pray also that this believer’s family will come to know Christ and cease in their persecution of him.
