Growing up as a Christian in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, her heart ached for those who didn’t know Jesus Christ. Then, one day in 2010, she felt compelled to do something about it: She decided to love and share the gospel with her Muslim neighbors.

One of the first women she approached in the streets of Makassar cried as Mina shared her testimony. Mina, who was still a teenager, held out her hand and asked the woman if she could pray for her. After praying, she invited the woman to study the Bible with her. The woman not only agreed but brought six other women to the Bible study with her.

“We would sing and I would read the Bible,” said Mina. “I told my pastor, ‘I think this is what the Lord wants me to do.’”

A Growing Love for Muslims

Mina’s pastor connected her with a longtime missionary, who taught her the methods that she had used to effectively reach Muslims with the gospel.

“The more I learned, the more my love grew for them,” Mina said. The work, however, was challenging, and Mina grew discouraged as many Muslims rejected her message of grace over the next few years.

Then, in 2014, Mina met two other women from an evangelistic training center in Makassar, and they made a commitment to sharing the gospel together every day throughout the city. “We just try to meet as many people as we can until the late hour,” Mina said. “Maybe we will have 10 people we meet, and sometimes one or two.”

Mina also sought additional training in evangelism. As she completed her training in 2016 and gained more experience, she said she began to feel comfortable in nearly every scenario, and not simply because she had changed her approach.

“It was mostly because of prayer,” she explained. “There were fewer churches that were joining us in prayer, but then that changed. Praise God.”

Mina and other evangelists drive around the city together, praying that God will lead them to those with whom they should share the gospel. She said God often leads them to mosques, where they wait patiently outside for the Holy Spirit’s prompting. Even when it’s not prayer time, people are usually sitting outside the mosques, resting and talking.

“The mosque is a place of worship,” she said, “so people who are going to the mosque are people who are more ready to talk about spiritual things because they are there looking for God.” Mina estimates that she and her team have helped lead around two dozen people to Christ since 2010. She has experienced persecution only once, and it occurred when she least expected it.

Mina’s “Big Problem”

In March 2018, as Mina was working with a new evangelism partner, she approached a woman outside a mosque to share the gospel. As she talked with the woman, others nearby started listening to her message.

Suddenly, a man with a long beard struck her on the back so hard that she nearly fell into a nearby sewer. “The man wanted to know my identity and asked for my ID card,” Mina recalled. “He accused me of trying to brainwash the people.”

Recognizing the confrontation as an opportunity, she sought God’s guidance in the situation. “I was very afraid,” Mina said. “It was a big man and me, a small lady.” Mina’s partner, unsure of what to do, watched silently.

“I just prayed in my heart that if it is time for me to die, I am ready,” Mina recalled. “This man was very mad and saying many things to me. My thoughts were just everywhere.”

As the man continued to berate Mina for trying to convert Muslims, others who had initially been receptive to her message also grew angry. Then Mina lost confidence. “It was like my bones wouldn’t hold me up,” she said. “I felt weak and wanted to collapse. I sent a text to my team, saying, ‘Please pray for me. I am facing a big problem here.’”

Eventually, Mina asked if she could speak. She sat down, reached out and calmly took the man’s hand. After the man also sat down, she began to share her faith. Although he continued to yell judgments at her, he listened to what she was saying, and they later agreed to exchange phone numbers.

But in the end, the man couldn’t contain his anger and threatened to post video on social media of her sharing the gospel with Muslims. “Don’t come back here,” he said. “If I see you somewhere else, you will have a big problem.”

Mina thanked the man for his time and promised to follow up with a text message. She then called a taxi, got in the car and started crying. Amazed that she hadn’t run away when things got heated, she suddenly had a deeper appreciation of Matthew 10:19–20, Jesus’ assurance that the Holy Spirit will give us the words to say when we are brought before authorities to bear witness before them.

“I was crying because the Holy Spirit really helped me,” she said. “I wasn’t alone, and I knew that. I saw that it wasn’t me.”

Although Mina has tried calling and texting the man, he has never responded. She prays that God is continuing to soften his heart toward the gospel. VOM supports Mina as she continues to share the love of Christ with Muslims.

“Persecution is something that must happen,” she said, “and I am ready for it.”

She said persecution has increased her faith and that the next time she experiences it, she knows for certain that the Holy Spirit will be with her. “Persecution is something that must happen,” she said, “and I am ready for it.”

Bullied Christian Boy Dies https://www.persecution.com/stories/bullied-christian-boy-dies/ Thu, 04 Sep 2025 07:07:06 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/bullied-christian-boy-dies/ Second-grader Khristopel Butarbutar, who was part of a Christian tribal group on Indonesia’s island of Sumatra, came home from school on May 19, 2025, injured and in pain. He had been beaten by five older Muslim boys in his school, the culmination of a week of bullying that included taunting him about his Christian faith. Khristopel continued to suffer and weaken physically, and his parents took him to the hospital, where he died on May 26. The autopsy showed the cause of death as a ruptured appendix, which may or may not have been the result of the beating, but the autopsy also showed internal bleeding and bruises that were consistent with blunt force trauma. Ask the Lord to comfort Khristopel’s family and for the Holy Spirit to lead the young assailants to repent and come to faith in Jesus Christ. Pray for our youngest brothers and sisters in Christ who, like Khristopel, also pay a high price for bearing Christ’s name.

Muslims Protest Church Construction https://www.persecution.com/stories/muslims-protest-church-construction/ Thu, 21 Aug 2025 07:07:07 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/muslims-protest-church-construction/ After a church in West Java province held a celebration to break ground for a new building, hundreds of Muslims came to protest the construction on July 5, 2025. They complained that church leaders did not properly communicate their plans, even though there had been public meetings with district, village and neighborhood leaders during the permitting process. Among other stipulations in the agreements for the church construction were provisions for the church to serve the public good, including road improvements and community use of the building. With about 220 million Muslim citizens, Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. Pray that churches like this one that are confronted with local intolerance and opposition will stand firm and proclaim the love of Christ to their neighbors.

Continued Healing for Bombing Survivor https://www.persecution.com/stories/continued-healing-for-bombing-survivor/ Thu, 10 Apr 2025 07:07:07 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/continued-healing-for-bombing-survivor/ Fenny’s life was forever changed after a May 2018 church bombing in Surabaya, Indonesia, but she continues to heal spiritually and physically. She shared how, through the recovery process, the Lord gave her purpose and helped her understand her worth in God’s eyes. She has undergone years of medical treatment and is making much progress. Fenny is now able to drive herself on a motorbike, something that would have been impossible for her even a year ago. Praise God for this progress, and pray that Fenny and the other bombing survivors would continue to experience God’s healing in their minds and bodies.

Obstacles Used to Suppress Gospel Advance https://www.persecution.com/stories/obstacles-used-to-suppress-gospel-advance/ Thu, 27 Mar 2025 07:07:06 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/obstacles-used-to-suppress-gospel-advance/ In a Muslim-dominated area of Indonesia, several different obstacles cause Muslims to hesitate placing their faith in Christ. Prohibitions against Christian burial in common cemeteries and exorbitant fees for Christian burial in approved locations remain a stumbling block for many who have expressed genuine interest in converting to Christianity. The cost of burial in an approved Christian plot can cost up to a few months’ wages, whereas Muslims can be buried for free on any private land. In the same area, front-line workers also cite problems such as village leaders forbidding access to certain areas for discipling new believers, mosque leaders breaking into worship gatherings and forbidding them from continuing, and landowners blocking roads leading to churches. Pray that none of these obstacles will restrain the advance of the gospel in Indonesia.

Safe Houses Bless Muslim-Background Believers https://www.persecution.com/stories/safe-houses-bless-muslim-background-believers/ Thu, 20 Mar 2025 07:07:05 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/safe-houses-bless-muslim-background-believers/ A Christian ministry in Indonesia runs four “blessing houses” that serve as temporary safe houses for Christian converts from Islam who are from one of Indonesia’s largest minority groups. These houses also serve as places of worship, discipleship and skill development centers for persecuted Christians. A front-line worker there said that every week she experiences “small-scale persecution” in the community. The persecution includes people throwing rocks at the houses, spreading rumors or trying to stir up local imams against her, but her kindness and generosity to the community has earned her more friends than enemies. Pray for the work done through these blessing houses, for favor in the community, and for renewed leases as all four houses’ leases expire this summer.

Pastor Imprisoned for Online Testimony https://www.persecution.com/stories/pastor-imprisoned-for-online-testimony/ Thu, 23 Jan 2025 08:07:06 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/pastor-imprisoned-for-online-testimony/ Pak Aman, a Sundanese Christian from a Muslim background, leads a small church and faithfully evangelizes in his community. He was arrested and held in police custody after appearing on the YouTube channel of another Muslim-background believer in Christ. He was accused of violating Indonesia’s blasphemy law. Aman said he originally anticipated that he would serve several years in prison due to the outcomes of other blasphemy cases, but the courts ruled in favor of Aman, and he was released from police detention after nine months. Praise God for Aman’s release and continue to pray for other Indonesian Christians who remain in detention or prison because of their faithful witness about Christ.

Prayers Answered in Case of Imprisoned Evangelist https://www.persecution.com/stories/prayers-answered-in-case-of-imprisoned-evangelist/ Thu, 26 Dec 2024 08:07:03 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/prayers-answered-in-case-of-imprisoned-evangelist/ Muhammad Kace is an evangelist in an Indonesian prison for charges of blaspheming Islam on his YouTube channel. Kace’s lawyers succeeded in getting his 12-year sentence reduced to eight years and are appealing to further reduce the sentence. Despite suffering and being imprisoned for his faith, Kace has been supported by local pastors and by the global body of Christ, enabling his family to rent a home near the prison and providing Kace with essential medication and food during his imprisonment. In a video call with front-line workers, Kace praised God and shared about his ministry in prison to the guards and others he interacts with. Pray for Kace’s wife, Watma, and their family as they wait with hope for his release. Kace’s son, Febri, shared that he was a nominal Christian when his dad was arrested, but his father’s testimony has led him into a real relationship with Jesus.

Brothers Minister to Minority People Group https://www.persecution.com/stories/brothers-minister-to-minority-people-group/ Thu, 05 Dec 2024 08:07:07 +0000 https://www.persecution.com/stories/brothers-minister-to-minority-people-group/ The Sundanese are one of the largest unreached minority groups in the world and have been resistant to the gospel. However, when three Muslim-background Sundanese brothers — Joyo, Setiaban and Wira — came to faith in Jesus Christ, they also became passionate evangelists. Their evangelistic success in their village eventually led to persecution. When the news of dozens of Christian conversions began to spread, one of the Islamic social organizations in Indonesia, Muhammadiyah, rallied members to stop the brothers and the spread of Christianity in their village. This led to two of them being arrested and all three being forced to leave their home. One brother, Wira, passed away a few years ago from illness. Pray that Joyo and Setiaban will remain vibrant witnesses for Christ among the Sundanese and that many more will come to faith in Christ through their testimony.
